Home Project Readiness Checklist
Use this before requesting estimates or hiring a home-service professional.
1. Define the problem
What is happening? When did it start? Is it getting worse?
What outcome do you want?
2. Capture useful details
- Take photos or video of the problem.
- Write down model numbers, approximate age, dimensions, or materials if relevant.
- Note whether utilities must be shut off or whether there is active water, smoke, sparking, structural movement, or another safety issue.
- List prior repairs or known history.
3. Questions to ask a contractor
- Are you insured and appropriately registered/licensed for this work?
- What exactly is included and excluded from the estimate?
- Who obtains permits if required?
- What materials and brands are included?
- What is the estimated start date and completion time?
- What warranty applies to labor and materials?
- What is the payment schedule?
- How are change orders handled?
4. Compare estimates on more than price
- Scope of work
- Materials and specifications
- Labor included

5. Red flags
